1) JUDGING CRITERIA – February 23, 2021 @ 6:00 pm

Judging Criteria will analyze the definition of “good surfing” from the judges’ perspective down to the finest details. Anyone can read the general criteria in the rule book, but dissecting and analyzing it from the judges’ angle gives a clear definition of what the judges want to see. Our focus will be shortboarding and longboarding, but we will also cover the basic criteria dynamics of SUP, bodyboarding, and adaptive surfing as well as defining judging scales and categories.

2) INTERFERENCE RULES – March 2, 2021 @ 6:00 pm

Interference Rules will analyze the various aspects that define an interference in the mind of a judge. It all hinges on “hindrance of scoring potential,” but beyond that it can be an extremely complex and interpretational decision. Understanding the interference rules is vital to competitive survival and success.

3) PRIORITY SYSTEM RULES AND STRATEGY – March 9, 2021 @ 6:00 pm

The priority system was originally created to give the competitors a fair and equal opportunity to ride waves without the hassling for position that often occurs in non-priority heats. Previously only used at the highest level events with 2 person heats, the system has evolved to multi-person priority heats and has become extremely widespread at events around the world. The rules create a pattern so that the competitors are taking turns throughout the heat, but the details are complex, absolutely necessary to understand, constantly evolving, and create an immense resource for strategy and tactics.

4) General Competition Rules, Scoring Systems, and Replay

In this course we will cover the General Competition Rules at everyday surf contests. This will include the basics but also will dwell a bit deeper into different formats, seeding and tips on preparation from checking-in for the first heat through making the finals. We will also cover the dynamics and differences of the two scoring systems currently used – computer scoring and manual tabulation. Lastly we will talk about the beneficial use of the video replay system as a tool for the judges to get the right result.

5) Leveling UP from “the first contest” to the Olympics

internationalsurfservices.surfsignup.com/activities/other/leveling-up

Every athlete has to start somewhere and usually that first surf contest is at a surf school, surf club, or scholastic surf team event, but where each surfer navigates from there is entirely up to them. The route to the highest level may seem complex, and although it’s very competitive towards the top, the path to get there is actually extremely structured with tiered levels. We will discuss this path in the USA from the start all the way to the details of the Olympics plus we will include all the organizations in between for beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.
